ADRA, in cooperation with the Belarusian Union churches, took part in the celebration hosted for children with Down syndrome.
Minsk, Belarus, March 20, 2016
On March 20th, the city of Minsk hosted the “Festival of Children and Youth” dedicated to the International Day for people with Down syndrome, where children with special needs from all over Belarus came to show their creative talents. The event was organized by the Minsk State Palace of Children and Youth, Youth NGO “Down Syndrome” and the Committee on Labor, Employment and Social Protection of Minsk City Executive Committee.
Chairman of the NGO “Down Syndrome,” Olga Protasiwizh, asked ADRA Belarus to take part in the festival. In response, the Adventist organization ADRA, together with the Belarusian Union churches, decided to give each child the gift of 150 books “Summer Rain” which includes children’s poems, biblical drawings, as well as a bright mug with warm words of love made specially for this event.
It was very touching to see how the children with Down syndrome, having received their mug and books, genuinely enjoyed their gifts. They were so happy, as if this is what they dreamed about all their lives. Their ability to find such joy from something so small reminded the adults to appreciate the smaller things in life.
It is important to note not what we did for these children, but what these children did for us. They have once again reminded us how important it is to treat people the way you would like to be treated.
